PTE Merangang takes on Autism

Today, Pusat Tingkatan Enam Meragang (PTEM) celebrated World Autism Awareness Day. Peer Counselors Group (PRS) and the rest of the student body initiated the wearing the blue ribbons to signify the World Autism Awareness Day celebrated globally on 2nd of April 2012.

Cikgu Hajah Masnah binti Daud, Head Counsellour of the school stated that the event was aimed to foster community awareness. She also stated how important that youths should be aware of public responsibility of the disorder. A student also mentioned that he was supportive of the event and that Brunei should do more to raise funds and actions to aid the autistic community.

Today, one in 150 children are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Initially, Autism Awareness Month is designed to raise funds for research and to show support for the autism community. It also promotes the rights of individuals with autism and encourages respect for their difference.

Nationally, the PTEM awareness event was aspired from the recent “Light it up blue” event at the Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong with blue lighting last Sunday to mark the 5th World Autism Awareness Day as a global initiative in a symbolic shining of light on autism.

PTEM PRS and the rest of the student body will also organize a fundraiser in the near future to commemorate the event.
